High School Field Trip with Midnight Petroleum and Esso

Thanks to Midnight Petroleum, the experiential science class at Diamond Jenness High School in Hay River celebrated the end of the school year with an overnight camping trip to Kakiska. Kakiska is a small yet beautiful area located in the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories. The teacher of this class, Kelly Webster organized a trip with her Indigenous students for a day filled with archeology and science. Jezelle Zatorski, Lisa Duncan and I all had the pleasure of engaging with the students and teaching more about archeology, outdoor survival skills and petroleum products.

We had the opportunity to stay at an Elder’s home and enjoy our fair share of freshly cooked pickerel and assisted the elders in preparing, cleaning and cooking for the class. We even participated in a round of survivor that tested students on some of the content they had learned in class. As a thank you gift, Esso provided fire-starting kits for each of the kids, as well as water bottles, hats and fish hooks.

Nutrien Ag Solutions attends Ag in Motion

From July 16th to July 18th, Nutrien Ag Solutions participated as a Platinum Sponsor at Ag in Motion (AIM), northwest of Saskatoon. AIM is the largest agricultural tradeshow in Western Canada, with over 30,000 farmers and Ag professionals in attendance.

With plenty of space and an attention-grabbing Esso Diesel Efficient truck on-site, Nutrien Ag Solutions had the opportunity to educate visitors on the solutions they provide. One of the most popular items at the Nutrien Ag Solutions booth were the Esso Diesel Efficient branded seed packets that were handed out to those passing by. Co-branded materials continue to re-enforce the relationship between Nutrien Ag Solutions and Esso. This allowed the Nutrien Ag Solutions team to chat with farmers about their fuel, and how Esso Diesel Efficient could take them further.

Artist with a Safety Flair: Neil Flegel

In early 2019, Neil Flegel of Dowler Karn had the opportunity to work with Sandy Miller (Workplace Safety and Prevention Services) and Daphne Nicolle (Imperial) to expand and improve Find the Hazards activities promoting the Stop, Think, Act safety message. Neil volunteered to dust off his pencils and markers to assist in recreating the AG interactive poster and creating new ones to educate youth on the dangers associated with everyday activities. With Neil’s ‘man cave’ recently being overtaken by his wife Lynn’s crafting activities… she was drafted to play a part in the development of materials by adding a splash of color. We wanted to thank them both for their hard work in developing these tools, now being used by Progressive AG safety volunteers across Ontario!

Here’s what Neil had to say about the importance of safety:

“There’s an old saying…. ”carefulness costs nothing but carelessness may cost you your life”. At minimum, it may cost you enjoyment of your life while impacting your family and livelihood. For me personally, after having spent most of my career in human resources and management roles, I understand that working smart and focusing on doing things right is just good business. Safety is a mindset and recognizing and eliminating hazards should be second nature. In recent years, I have particularly found enjoyment in presenting the Stop, Think, Act methodology to youth. It is simple and relatable and they seem to embrace it!”

  • While Neil also stays busy as a municipal politician, he admits to always having had a fondness for the arts. In his younger days, he pursued many artistic endeavors, including airbrushed T-shirts, graphic design for a successful clothing line (Lemming Wear), and was often known as the class cartoonist. Today, he typically only practices this skill with his nieces and nephews, drawing on napkins or restaurant table placemats.

Chinook Fuels: Managing Fuel use, at their fingertips

Since 2006, Chinook Fuels has been proudly serving the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the oil sands region of northern Alberta as an Esso branded reseller and Mobil distributor. Throughout this time, the economy has seen its share of highs and lows. This has prompted many oil sands companies, contractors, and customers of Chinook to reflect on their current business practices and find ways to increase efficiency, reliability, trackability, safety, all while decreasing spending, and unnecessary downtime.

Understanding the challenges Chinook’s customers’ face with managing and tracking fuel, Chinook looked to leverage industry leaders in fuel equipment and management capabilities to find the best solution to meet its needs. This led Chinook to the EKOS (Energy Knowledge Operating System) powered by Gasboy.

The EKOS System is connected to the fuel storage tank cardlock station, and is the only cloud based platform that provides fleet managers with visibility of their fleet, inventory monitoring, fuel management and accurate reporting. You can view which unit and driver are fueling, at what time, and how many liters of fuel is dispensed all on the personalized dashboard. With real time reporting, EKOS assists in reducing admin time, fuel theft, and managing fuel use.

Gasboy also provides additional electronic fuel controllers: the Fuel Truck Controller and the Fuel Point Plus System.

The Fuel Point Plus System, uses secure RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) communication rings which are placed on the fuel tank of each vehicle in the fleet that will be fueling at that cardlock or by fuel truck.

  • The RFID tag enables the card reader on the cardlock or fuel truck dispenser to identify the vehicle, and captures other data, including fuel levels, mileage, and maintenance due.
  • Information collected by the RFID tag is sent directly to the EKOS system and can be seen and managed on the dashboard. This valuable information will enable fleet managers to track and schedule preventative maintenance, in turn, ensuring fleet reliability and decreasing downtime.

Chinook is ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring this technology to the oil sands region and its customers. Chinook is working with Kearl Lake Oilsands cardlock to implement the EKOs – Gasboy system over the course the next 12 months.

Harnois Energies hosts the 37th Annual Classique Richelieu-Harnois Golf Tournament

On June 4th, Harnois Energies hosted their annual Classique Richelieu-Harnois Golf Tournament at the Club de Golf Montcalm in St-Liguori, with funds raised supporting disadvantaged individuals in the greater Lanaudière region.  The foundation was created with the goal of helping those in poverty and encourage youth to develop to their full potential on a financial, academic, cultural, athletic social or emotional levels.

Imperial’s three business lines: commercial fuels, retail fuels and lubricants were proud to come together as a platinum sponsor of the event and support a great cause. The golf tournament raised just over $230,000 with a record breaking $340,000 raised via the silent auction. An impressive amount raised by an impressive group of people!

The 38th annual edition of the tournament is set to tee off on June 2, 2020.

Morgan Fuels nominated for business of the year in Dryden, ON

Fueling communities $75,000 give-away

As part of their 75th-anniversary celebrations, Dowler Karn Ltd is giving away $75,000 to 75 community groups in their local communities.  Organizations can be nominated for the program by community members or on their own.  Then the public in the area are encouraged to sponsor (vote) for the organization or cause of their choice on-line.

The organization must be part of the community where Dowler Karn does business and be involved in one of these five areas:  Activities & Sports; Arts & Music; Health & Wellness; Social Services or Civic Causes. The Fuelling Communities event is designed to address local needs and contribute to strong and vibrant communities, including our Indigenous communities.

The marketing goal for Dowler Karn with this campaign is to promote corporate, brand and product offering, awareness and recognition to our serviceable geography.

As of July 9, 2018 there have been some impressive results:

  • 115 projects have been submitted – with more coming in every day!
  • 50 of the projects with enough sponsors to be eligible for review by the Bursary Review Committee
  • 4,425 people have signed up to be sponsors
  • New users/visitors to the Dowler Karn website – 24,292
